Online activity held to celebrate National Science Popularization Day

An online activity focused on the future of science popularization was held on Sept 17 to celebrate National Science Popularization Day. Jointly conducted by the Secretariat of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum and the journal The Innovation, the event invited young scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to share their scientific research achievements and stories. 

Yang Wei, a researcher of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS, showcased images and a three-dimensional model of lunar soil particles.

He explained the definition of lunar soil, and pointed out its physical properties, chemical composition, particle type and composition and formation mechanism. Yang illustrated the formation and evolution of the moon and interpreted how scientists learned about the evolution of the moon by analyzing lunar soil. 

Zhang Qianggong, a researcher of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, CAS, delivered a speech themed the memory of ice and snow. Known as the Roof of the World, Tibetan Plateau is the largest of its kind in China and the highest in the world. It has more than 50,000 square kilometers of glaciers that are closely related to natural and human activities. Zhang called for more attention to the environmental protection of snow and ice. 

Dai Ji, an associate researcher of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, CAS, shared the latest research on human consciousness. He noted that 18-month old babies can recognize their reflection in a mirror, which is a sign of self-awareness.

This activity was supported by the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, CAS, the journal The Innovation and the science and technology association of Nansha district. It adopted livestreaming formats and attracted more than 50,000 viewers.
