Malik Peiris

Malik Peiris is the founding academician of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, an international member of the National Academy of Sciences, chair professor of virology at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. He is also dean of the School of Public Health and a Tam Wah-Ching Professor in Medical Science at the University of Hong Kong.

Peiris studied medicine and graduated from the University of Ceylon (MBBS) in 1972. He received a PhD from the University of Oxford in 1981 and received clinical virology training at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. He joined the University of Hong Kong in 1995 and was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. Peiris was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2008. In 2015, he was elected as the founding academician at the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. Peiris was elected as a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences in 2017 and won the Life Science Award of the Future Science Prize in 2021.
